Chopta

4 Days

High in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand lies Chopta—a gentle alpine meadowland often called the “Mini Switzerland of India”. At around 2,700 m (≈8,900 ft) in elevation, this region is swathed in deodar and rhododendron forests and opens up into sweeping slopes that lead trekkers to sacred shrines and high summits.

The journey from Chopta begins on forest‐covered trails under oak and pine boughs, gently rising as you approach the ancient shrine of Tungnath Temple—the highest Shiva temple in the world, perched at roughly 3,680 m. From there, the path continues to the summit of Chandrashila (≈4,090 m), where a 360° panorama rewards the early-morning trekker with vistas of Himalayan giants like Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Chaukhamba.

Chopta offers an accessible winter trekking opportunity: in snow the meadows turn into quiet white expanses, the route simplifies into crisp morning climbs, and the chill of Himalayan air sharpens the senses. The trek is panoramic yet not overly technical, making it appealing to beginner and intermediate trekkers alike. The climate can swing briskly—especially at dawn and on the summit—so good layering and winter gear protect and enhance the experience.

Whether you reach Chopta for a weekend thunder-break in snow, a spiritual stop at Tungnath, or the summit thrill of Chandrashila, this trek delivers mountain stillness and dramatic peaks. It’s a place where the boots matter, the wind speaks in hushed tones, and the Himalayan range stretches out, offering its grandeur for your gaze and your story.
